A SEATBELT enforcement campaign is to be carried out by the South Cumbria Road Policing Unit throughout September.

The fixed penalty for motorists not wearing a seatbelt has recently risen from £30 to £60 and police nationally are cracking down on the offence.”The vast majority of the motoring public understand the importance of wearing a seatbelt at all times,” said Inspector Richie Vernon. “But there seems to still be a proportion of good vehicle drivers who don’t feel that the laws apply to them.

“The general guide is that if a seatbelt is fitted to the vehicle it must be worn.”

Traffic officer will be targeting lorry drivers through the campaign but parents are also being urged to familiarise themselves with the seatbelt laws.
