FLOOD victims in South Lakeland will benefit from more than £1million donated to a charity fund set up following last weeks devastating floods.

The Cumbria Flood Recovery Fund has received £1.1million so far to help families affected by the floods.

Those in South Lakeland have already received £2,000.

Elaine Wise of the Cumbria Community Foundation said it is the most successful campaign the charity has ever run.

“A family in Coniston heard about the fund on the radio whilst driving from their flooded home to temporary accommodation in Ambleside,” she said.

“They will use the money for household equipment such as a washing machine and children’s toys.

“The long term effects are huge and we need to carry on fundraising to help these families in the coming weeks and months.”

The biggest donators so far are The Francis C Scott Charitable Trust, James Walker and The Northern Rock Foundation which donated £100,000 each.

Locally, The Rotary Club of Kendal raised £3870 during a collection in the town last week, while the Kendal Kent Valley Rotary Club raised £185 during a charity quiz night.

Members of the Wainwright Society collected £250 following a lecture at Otley Methodist Church on Saturday night.

Elsewhere, Cockermouth band ESP have recorded a charity version of Over The Rainbow which will be released internationally with all royalties going to the flood victims.

South of the county border, Carnforth Rotary Club members donated £500.
