ULVERSTON travelled back in time as characters created by one of the world’s most famous writers lined its cobbled streets.

The annual Dickensian Festival took over the town at the weekend and locals and visitors got into the spirit of Victorian times by wearing traditional costumes and taking part in activities from yesteryear.

There was plenty to see and do, with the eye-catching grand costume procession featuring a whole manner of Dickensian characters and carriages.

The sun was out to warm the crowds on Saturday, but they weren’t so lucky on Sunday when the heavens opened, but it failed to dampen spirits with bands and choirs, and comedy acts.

The grand parade, led by the Ulverston Town Band, weaved through the town centre to the Market Cross where mayor Norman Bishop-Rowe switched on the Christmas lights.

The flea circus was a hit, as was Betty Brawn, strong woman extraordinaire – just one of a myriad of street entertainers with lots on offer to sate the appetite of the crowds.

A costume ball rounded the weeked off in style.
