CUMBRIA County Council will introduce traffic controls when a new footbridge opens across the River Derwent on Monday The army-built temporary bridge will reconnect the north and south sides of Workington after major flooding destroyed Northside Bridge and Calva Bridge.

Communities have faced long diversions via Cockermouth to cross the river.

The bridge is scheduled to be open at 8.05am tomorrow morning.

CCC is introducing new traffic control systems to ease the congestion both north and south of the bridge as school children, commuters and shoppers are dropped off or picked up on either side of the bridge.

The bridge will be available for use 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

A new one way system west to east will be in place along Northside Road.

Double yellow lines, limited parking, limited vehicle access, a new pedestrian crossing point and new barriers and lighting will also be in place.

Public transport services will be boosted to help take people to and from the footbridge.

Work is in hand to examine a number of options for a temporary vehicle bridge.
