A South Lakeland firm that aims to bring a touch of magic into people's homes has undergone a major expansion.

Majik House directors Tim and Carol Burrow say their new showroom, which has taken six months to assemble, is the only one of its kind in the country.

Situated in a 3,000 sq ft unit on the Main Line Industrial Estate, near Milnthorpe, the showroom houses a stunning array of home automation.

A series of sets featuring familiar domestic settings, from the lounge and kitchen to a bedroom and bathroom, showcase a wide range of electronic wizardry.

The lounge, for example, boasts a giant plasma TV screen, a projection screen that drops down from the ceiling and a state-of-the-art sound system.

Clients can buy a bathroom complete with a flat screen TV in the shower or steam room, or a bed from which a flat screen appears and which can tilt to provide a more comfortable viewing position.

What makes this technology extra special is that it can all be adjusted along with heating, lighting and security systems - using a single remote control.

The showroom marks a big step forward for the business, founded six years ago by Mr and Mrs Burrow, who up until now have used their own home at Borwick as a showcase for technology.

"The showroom has enabled us to show more and more variations of the whole concept of what we offer," said Mr Burrow.

"I had a dream of building a huge house as a showroom, but when this opportunity came up it seemed an ideal site.

"From a professional point of view, architects and builders will come to a place like this far more readily than to a house."

The business initially sprang from Mr Burrow's hobby. A trained mechanical tool maker by profession, he worked for W.R. Anderton of Flookburgh for 19 years, latterly as works manager.

But when his passion for home automation technology rubbed off on friends, who asked him to do installations for them, he saw the potential for starting his own business and has not looked back since.

The Majik House works regularly with half a dozen housebuilders, giving them the chance to put added extras into new developments, as well as carrying out installations in existing homes.

With a buoyant order book, the business carries out work all over the country, as well as abroad, and has six installers working full-time.

Clients include top footballers and minor celebrities, and the firm's largest project to date cost £200,000, but Mr Burrow is keen to stress that customers do not necessarily need deep pockets to add some magic to their homes.
