TORRISHOLME came out on top in the eagerly-awaited local derby' with cricketing rivals Bare on Sunday.

Only hundreds of yards separate the pitches of the teams who play in the top division of different leagues and it was Torrisholme who moved into the last eight of the Tower Shield.

Bare batted first and the opening partnership of Regan (18) and Smith (18) made steady progress in the face of hostile bowling from Gould (2-15) before Bissett (29) and Westworth (55) gave the innings some acceleration.

Osmotherley (2-18) was the pick of the remaining Torrisholme bowlers as they restricted Bare to a below par 136 in their 40 overs.

In reply, Gould hit a quick 24 while Osmotherley played a sheet anchor role in compiling 33 as debutant Neave hit a fine 20 and the quick-silver Troughton savaged the Bare bowlers for 36 in leading Torrisholme beyond the target with six overs and five wickets to spare.

Torrisholme's good start to the Palace Shield season was dented by a second successive defeat 24 hours earlier.

Put in on a bouncy track at Freckleton, Torrisholme's top order folded in the face of some accurate but limited bowling as they crumbled to a miserable 66 all out. Only Barry looked comfortable but he ran out of partners as he was on the verge of acceleration.

In the field, both Gould and Jackson bowled fast but there were too few runs to play with as Freckleton ran out winners at 67 for 3.
