COUNCIL bosses have scrapped controversial plans to introduce on-street car parking charges across Cumbria.

The money that would have been spent to roll out the scheme will now be put towards rebuilding bridges swept away by flooding at Workington and Cockermouth, in the north of the county.

Councillor Stewart Youg, deputy leader of Cumbria County Council, said: “It makes sense to focus our resources and our efforts on the immediate priority of getting our infrastructure back up and running.

“The money saved by not introducing car parking charges will be reinvested into a gragramme of work on flood damaged footbridges - speeding up the replacement and repair programme.”
