A CONTROVERSIAL skate park in Carnforth has moved another step closer.

Lancaster City Council's Cabinter has jumped to support the plan in partnership with the Carnforth Area Regeneration Partnership (CARP) and the local Town Council.

They want to provide the facility for BMX, skateboard and roller blade users - and have also agreed to seek funds to improve playground facilities in the town's Dunkirk Avenue.

CARP representative Tony Rimmer says campaigners are now keen to get the development up and running.

"We shall be having a meeting in the next few days to sort out the plans for the park within the next two years which is the time needed to raise funds.

"It is now down to us to prepare the proposals because the original funding has been lost."

The city Cabinet originally vetoed the skate park scheme after ward councillors and local residents objected to the development of the park at the Dunkirk Avenue site.

But the council's overview and scrutiny committee criticised the lack of clarity in the consultation process, the lack of involvement of young people in the process and the loss of external funding due to last minute decision making and proposed that cabinet reconsidered its decision.
