FOR MORE than 25 year, Alfie Woods ran his mobile butchers business, five days a week around the Eden Valley and on Saturdays took up his regular position in Appleby's Market Square.

born in 1939 at Hackthorpe, he raised money for charity, played dominoes with his mates, and loved life, people, family, friends, and customers. His sudden death has left a void in the community of Appleby and the many villages in the area that he served.

During his time working at Appleby, Alfie helped out with another of the town's great personalities, Bob Archibald, known to everyone as "Butcher Bob" because he had a mobile butchers business. Alfie often went with him on his rounds.

When Mr Archibald died, Alfie decided to take on the mobile butchers, and it was then that he found his true vocation in life and hundreds of people in the Eden Valley and beyond found a good friend.

Any donations given in memory of Alfie will be divided between the Brittle Bone Society and the Great North Air ambulance.
