A campaign to encourage visitors to take greater advantage of green transport when holidaying in the Lake District has been launched.

It aimed to illustrate how the area can be explored by boat, bike or bus. The campaign was organised by the Windermere Consortium, consisting of a group of businesses based in Windermer and Bowness.

To add a sense of fun to the proceedings, an expeditionary voyage on the lake was launched from Bowness Pier in search of the Tizzie-Wizzie, a fictional creature said to resemble a hedgehog with a squirrel's tail and wings like a bee.

The Consortium, which includes the Lake District Visitor Centre at Brockhole,

Windermere Lake Cruises, the World of Beatrix Potter, and the Aquarium of the Lakes, said the aim of the campaign was to underline the importance of a sustainable transport programme for Windermere and showcase the alternative ways to explore the region without a car.

Spokesman Cathy Burrows said: "We chose the Tizzie-Wizzie as the mascot for this year's campaign because it represents the essence of what makes Windermere so special.

"It appeals to younger visitors, highlights the region's natural history and the rich literary and story telling heritage of Lakeland life. The Tizzie-wizzie also has impeccable environmental credentials. It is terrified of motor cars and is regularly spotted cadging lifts on passing boats."
