TWO Ulverston policemen were among a group of 11 offices presented with awards after their quick-thinking and decisive actions resulted in a substantial amount of drugs being seized.

On January 18 last year PC Michael Lackey and PC Mark Jordan, of the Mobile Support Group in Ulverston, were carrying out checks on vehicles in the town.

During the routine operation the pair was tipped off by a member of the public that a man had been dealing drugs in the town.

The pair contacted police headquarters and a full-scale operation was launched to track down the car.

Officers in Barrow later stopped the car in the town and when searched a handgun was found as well as crack cocaine with a street value of £3,500 and heroin worth £4,000 was found.

The three men in the car were prosecuted at Preston Crown Court in September last year. Two men received eight-year jail sentences and the other a 12-month conditional discharge.

The 11 officers who took part in the operation were presented with Good Policing Awards by South Area commander Superintendent Garry Horlacher at Barrow Police Station.

He said: "It is great when we get patrol officers and CID working together and we do a good job and get a cracking result."

PC Jordan, who joined the police force eight years ago, said: "I am really pleased to have received the award as it is nice to have recognition for your work. But the operation was all about team work, as we couldn't have done if we had not all worked together."
