Lovers of fine furniture and antiques have a new venue to check out in Kirkby Stephen.

Heart of Oak Gallery is the latest development at the former church building which now houses the town's post office and Emporium.

Owners Jackie and David Semple discovered two stained glass windows when they developed the building which now form the focal point to the mezzanine floor which they installed when creating the Emporium.

The beamed ceiling and dramatic lighting make the perfect venue to display not only original antiques sourced from around the country but also the handcrafted oak furniture created using traditional methods.

Jackie said: "We have always intended to create a gallery in this space, but wanted to get the shop and post office established first. The Emporium was our first experience of retail and now, 18 months on, we feel ready to open the Hearts of Oak Gallery."

David, who works from his workshop in Hartley, is a sixth-generation carpenter and cabinetmaker. As well as creating the beautiful pieces, which are on display at Hearts of Oak, he also works on commissions.

Jackie said: "David uses traditional methods and hand tools to make the furniture which is mainly in English oak, though he does work with elm, applewood and others. He likes to know where the wood comes from and often starts from the felled tree state.

"Our idea has always been to have a mix of restored antiques and quality, handmade furniture made by David."

The couple, who have lived in the Kirkby Stephen area for more than 14 years, are mixing the furniture with handcrafted pewterware from Italy, and are planning to source more pewter tableware from Portugal.

Hearts of Oak Gallery offers accompanied viewing Monday to Friday, 10.30am until 4.30pm, and Saturdays until 2pm.
