LANCASTER City Council looks set to see a hotly contested election campaign this year with more than 180 nominations from contenders across the political spectrum.

Both the Labour and Green parties have put forward more than 40 candidates in a bid to win power at the hung council, with the Conservative Party not far behind with 34 nominations.

The Morecambe Bay Independents are fielding 20 candidates, while there are more than 25 other Independents and one from the UK Independence Party.

The Liberal Democrats have 15 nominations, and the Socialist Alliance has one.

Nominations include:

Bolton-le-Sands: Arthur Briggs (Ind), Keith William Budden (Ind), Anthony G Johnson (Con), Avril Moncaster (Green).

Carnforth: Kim Sharon Battersby-Hill (Con), Gregory Ronald Beaman (UK Ind), Paul Malcolm Gardner (Lab), Stephen Barry Hoyland (Green), Edna Elizabeth Jones (Lab), Robert James Roe (Ind).

Kellet: Geoffrey Christopher Ford (Ind), John Roger Mace (Con), Adrian Mackenzie (Green).

Lower Lune Valley: Lucy Elizabeth Hampson (Green), Raymond Hill (Lab), Frederick McGlade (Con), Richard John Newton-Thomas (Lab), Bronwyn Melissa Newton (Green), George Birkett Platts (Con), Joyce Pritchard (Lib Dem), Patricia Mary Quinton (Lib Dem).

Silverdale: Amanda Faith Bingley (Green), Sarah Margaret Debonnaire Fishwick (Con), Peter Roberts (Ind).

Upper Lune Valley: James Airey (Con), David Michael Mason (Lib Dem).
