RESIDENTS are being given the opportunity to enjoy discounts and free admission to some of the region's top attractions.

Now in its second year, Residents Open Week, organised by South Lakeland District Council, allows local people to step into the shoes of tourists and sample some of the area's attractions, hotels and retail outlets.

A special pass, available from Tourist Information Centres, selected post offices and newsagents, and proof of local residency are all that is needed to enjoy the offers, which run from April 7-11.

Assistant tourism officer at SLDC Cherie Fox said: "This is such a popular event, with many residents inquiring about the scheme many months in advance and it is important that all sections of the community can enjoy the benefits of Residents Open Week.

"What's more, by making a small donation, residents have the satisfaction of knowing they are putting something back into the area they live in."

More than £250 worth of offers are available through the scheme and a suggested donation of £1 is recommended in exchange for a pass. Donations will then be pumped back into green projects undertaken by the Lake District Tourism Conservation Partnership.

This year projects set to benefit are the resurfacing of a footpath from Hawkshead Church to Walker Ground and improving the off-road cycle route between Coniston and Torver.
