A FORMER village school, which closed three years ago because of falling numbers, has sold for £30,000 more than the expected price.

Ulpha School and the former schoolmaster's cottage in the Duddon Valley were expected to attract a price tag of £ 280,000 when it was sold at auction on Friday.

It was due to be sold in two lots but bidding in the Victory Hall in Broughton-in-Furness started slowly.

The owners, the Carlisle Diocese, agreed to change its policy so the three-bedroomed stone and slate cottage and school were sold together for £310,000.

They were bought by a school teacher currently living in Oxford.

Auctioneer and one of the partners at Michael CL Hodgson, which was handling the sale, Colin Tomlinson said he did not know the school teacher's plans for the school and cottage.

The school closed on August 31, 1999, following a review of surplus classroom places by Cumbria County Council.
