ANTI-WAR campaigners in Ulverston collected more than 340-signatures in just four hours in an attempt to convince the Government not to support a United States-led military attack on Iraq.

About ten people gathered in Market Square bearing placards and handing out leaflets last Thursday.

Passers-by were offered a petition to sign, which received support from 346-people.

The protest was part of a national day of action organised by the Stop The War Coalition.

The petition has been sent to the organisation and once signatures from all the protests around the country have been gathered together they will be sent to Prime Minister Tony Blair.

One of the campaigners, Judith Scott, of Soutergate, Ulverston, said any action against Iraq was a challenge to the authority of the United Nations.

She said: "I have never been on a campaign and had such a good response.

People just feel so strongly about the topic

that they just wanted to stop and talk."

Mrs Scott said because of the overwhelming res-ponse from the demo she was planning to set up a peace group in Ulverston.

"From the protest I think there are enough people to come together to form a type of steering group.

We could meet and discuss various issues as well as having regular speakers," she said.
