ANOTHER chapter in Sedbergh School's annals of supplying top-class Rugby Union internationals will be written when James Simpson-Daniel makes his debut for England against the All Blacks at Twickenham on Saturday.

Twenty-year-old Simpson-Daniel left Sedbergh just two years ago when he was headed-hunted by Premiership side Gloucester to play for their academy.

He had already been marked down as a future star, having played for England schoolboys and his meteroic rise through the ranks has earned him his first full England cap to play outside another former Sedbergh pupil centre Will Greenwood.

Sedbergh's Director of Rugby Dan Harrison said: "We have always known that we had something special when James was here at Sedbergh.

"He came into his own when in our Upper Sixth when he played for England Schools and went straight from here to Gloucester when a lot of Premiership clubs wanted to sign him.

"As a schoolboy he played as a fly-half and he has so much ability with his hands and quick feet and spatial awareness that I think we might see him playing closer to the scrum eventually.

"We certainly have not seen the best of such a talented individual and there is much more to come."

Simpson-Daniel, who is from Stockton, was in the Sedbergh First XV that won the national Rosslyn Park Open Sevens for schools in 1999.

After making his mark at Gloucester, Simpson-Daniel impressed England coach Clive Woodward when he danced around Jonah Lomu to score a brilliant try in a non-cap England side which played the Barbarians back in May - and the two men are set to oppose again on Saturday.

Kendal coach Neil Rollings oversaw the development of James when he taught at Sedbergh and said: "He's been in touch and says he's terrified.

James is the most outrageous talent in England and he has earned his place."

His brothers Mark and Charlie are both at Sedbergh but they will be playing on Saturday - watched by their father under a family agreement - instead of watching James at Twickenham.

Charlie is the fly-half for the First XV which is due to play Stonehurst College on Saturday and Mark occupies the same role for the Under-14s.

The whole school will cheer on the Sedbergh old boys when they watch a video recording of the big match when the school fixtures have been completed.

Simpson-Daniel joins an illustrious list of Sedbergh old boys to be capped for England with legendary names like Wavell Wakefield, John Spencer and Will Carling on the roll of honour.
