In 1831, Jonathan Dodgson Carr left the family home in Kendal and went for a walk - to Carlisle! The baker and inventor of the first automated biscuit dough-cutter was determined to make a name for himself.

Five years after arriving in the border city, JD did just that when he opened a biscuit factory and bought a flour mill.

In 1880, however, the flour entrepreneur set his sights on the Cumbrian coastal town of Silloth.

Here he had a new mill built alongside the rapidly-developing port facilities for the wheat he wanted to import from North America and Canada.

The mill was the first of many flour revolutions and product innovations for Carrs - the latest is an easy-to-use home yogurt-making kit.

However, it was Carrs Sauce Flour that really put the company in the spotlight - and all because Delia Smith gave the product her seal of approval.
