I have, very happily, spent several weeks in the Lake District every year for over 40 years.
I visit Britain every year for this reason and find the tourist offices extremely helpful.
Over the past 10 years I have been visiting between November and April.
I find it quiet and beautiful and there is the advantage of special DBB 'Winter Breaks' at many good hotels.
I do understand there being a single supplement in the summer but am always surprised that some hotels add a 'singles supplement' charge in the low
season when the Hotel is very quiet.
I chose to stay at those that do not add this charge in the winter.
Even in the winter/spring 2001-2, at the height of the foot and mouth disaster when I stayed for 16 weeks, a single supplement was required to
stay at many, near empty, Hotels.
I did stay in some splendid Hotels, without this extra charge, sometimes in a double room.
In planning my upcoming winter visit to the UK, (i.e.
The Lakes) I find that many hotels still charge a single-supplement, and a hefty one at that.
Fortunately I now have a list of excellent hotels that accommodate singles, regularly or just in the low season, without extra charge.
If there is a 'forum' where I could send a list of these hotels for the benefit of other singles, please let me know.
