ROB Jebb carved four minutes off the Three Peaks Cyclo Cross record when the Staveley-based rider recorded his second consecutive victory in the event, which was not held last year because of foot and mouth.

Jebb, aged 27, racing for Team Ronhill in unusually fast, dry conditions for September, beat world-class mountain-biker Nicky Craig, and picked up a handy £575 in prizemoney.

Jebb, who works for British Telecom out of Windermere said: "It's quite a specialised event and suits me because of my fell-running background.

"Most cyclo-crosses last about an hour and are much shorter and a bit quicker and although I can finish in the top 10, I'm not able to do quite as well."

One of the best fields for the marathon event had assembled at Helwith Bridge.

Taking the lead on the first climb up Ingleborough, Jebb was never headed over Wharfedale and Pen Y Ghent to add the three summit prizes of £25

apiece to the £500 winner's purse.

Jebb's record time of 2hr 53 min 39sec was four minutes better than the previous best mark.

He came in two minutes clear of Craig, who had been 15th in the World Mountain Bike Championships, and Chris Young, of Gargrave, a previous three-times winner of the event and former national cyclo-cross champion.
