Seventy-six jobs are to be lost at the K-Shoe Factory in Kendal, a stunned workforce was told today.

A total of 49 blue collars workers and 27 white-collar staff will be made redundant and parent company Clarks International is seeking voluntary leavers.

Shocked staff, who were sent home for the weekend after the announcement at 2pm, said they had expected job losses but not as many as 76.

Clarks blamed the redundancies on competition in the manufacture of footwear in places such as the Far East.

Employees made redundant will be given training and assistance to find alternative employment.
