GRASMERE Guides race winner Rob Jebb followed up with another notable run in the competitive Ben Nevis race at the weekend, finishing third to Lochaber's David Rogers and his fellow Bingley team-mate Ian Holmes on a wet, misty day.

Jebb, who has just moved to Burneside, was just two minutes off the winner and ahead of Andy Peace in fourth place who was the third counter to give Bingley the team prize and had been first to the summit.

There was a formidable gale-force wind gusting at the top, but it dropped as the principal runners came through and Rogers said afterwards he felt his strong descending would always give him the edge over the rest.

"He had been pretty confident about it and came down like a goat," said race organiser George MacFarlane, who confirmed it was Rogers' third win in the event, his 19-second winning margin over Holmes denying that rival a fifth Ben success.

Another Burneside resident Mark Roberts, who runs for Borrowdale, was tenth and his clubmate Steve Hicks, of Windermere, came 16th with Keswick's Dave Birch 18th out of the 385 field.

Ilkley's Tracy Ambler won the women's race.

This year's Dalehead Race will not take place.

Borrowdale Fell Race did take place on August but continuing outbreaks of foot-and-mouth had lead to the Dalehead Race - started as part of Borrowdale Show - to be cancelled.
