KENT Valley Road Club's Andrew Powell served notice on Saturday that he has still not given up hope of retaining his North Lancs Time Trials Association Best All Rounder title.

Riding in the reorganised Barrow Central Wheelers 10 miles time trial at Garstang, the area's re-crowned 12-hour champion showed he is now over his half-day effort with a resounding third place in 21mins 35secs behind Preston winner Gethin Butler on 20-52.

Ulverston's Mike Speight (BCW) did a 22-50 with clubmates Barry Fittes riding 23-57 and Ian Saunders clocking 26-44.

The women's event was won by world track pursuit champion Yvonne McGregor in 21-38.

Andrew Powell now hopes to improve his BAR qualifiying rides at 50 miles and 25 miles before the season draws to a close at the end of this month.

Matt Woods (KV) made the journey to North Wales worthwhile at the weekend with second place in a masters mountain bike event behind North West cyclo cross champion Darren Kay.

The event was held near Wrexham.

Travelling even further, Kent Valley's Sharon Padley, Heather Addison and Judith Irvine helped bolster a six-woman Cottingham Couriers RT squad in the Cheltenham and County CC ladies road race, the seventh of a national series.

For Heather and Judith it was a road racing baptism of fire as an early faller split the field but their presence helped Cottingham to team victory with Sharon 14th, Heather 18th and Judith 22nd.

Cottingley also provided the overall winner, Vanessa Firth, in the 75 kilometre event.

Back in the Wigan Wheelers 25 miles time trial at Garstang, Gethin Butler was in a class of his own, winning in 54-03 despite temporary traffic lights which hampered progress for most of the field.

Kent Valley's Tim Bennett and Richard Belk did 1-02-10 and 1-03-23 respectively; and Barrow's George Jackson rode 1-16-00 on his trike.

Last week's VTTA 25 miles time trial on the Cockerham circuit was won by Clayton Velo's Peter Greenwood in 58-19.

Fastest on standard was Barry Fittes with an actual time of 1-02-05.

Mike Speight rode 1-00-22; Ian Saunders (BCW) clocked 1-10-54; and Kent Valley's Steve Unsworth and Frank Kilburn did 1-11-06 and 1-11-57.

Julia Mattison of LCC rode 1-13-55.

The last Kent Valley Club 10 of the season at Milnthorpe was won by Andrew Powell in 22-28 from Andrew Barlow's 22-34 and Lakes RC's Andy Gunson on 23-08.

Other leading times were posted by: John Leach 23-33; David Farrer 23-42; Adrian Yate 24-00; Matt Woods 24-03; Paul Trott 24-25; Richard Belk 24-26; and Tony Dixon 24-43.
