ALVIN Finch, of Ambleside Boxing Club, has become a boxing referee.

His refereeing qualification will allow him to officiate throughout the North West of England for the ABA.

He received his sixth and final assessment from Dave Reynolds of Ambleside , who adjudicated him in action in a contest between a Danish team and a Bolton Select team.

Former featherweight world champion Barry McGuigan, a friend of Dave Reynolds, was guest speaker at the tournament, which raised a massive £35,000 for charity.

Finch began boxing at Kendal Boxing Club when he was nine, coached by Alan Willoughby.

He became North West Schoolboy champion three times and went on to win the North West Senior title.

During his boxing career he fought former professional world champion Paul Hodgkinson when he was still an amateur.

Finch had a total of 104 amateur bouts and was never knocked out.

He tried his hand as a pro, but returned to the amateur ranks after six fights, joining Ambleside ABC with the aim of becoming a judge and referee.
