HALF of the 20-strong workforce at Middlebarrow Quarry, Silverdale, are to be made redundant next week following the break down of an expensive stone crushing machine.
The quarry planned to close next year, but with the loss of the cutting machine owners Hanson Aggregate decided to bring the closure plans forward.
Ten workers are to lose their jobs next week, and five will be relocated to other quarries at Shap and Ingleton.
The remaining workforce will stay until September to oversee restoration of the site.
