BURNING AMBITION: Skills and techniques from more than two centuries ago have been taught again in South Lakeland.

A course in traditional 'earth burning' and 'pole-lathe turning' was held at Bowkerstead, near Grizdale, by local expert Arthur Barker and was attended by nearly a dozen people.

The burn was tended continously for three days by the small group in the same way that was practised more than two centuries ago.

To celebrate a busy first day, Mr Barker and his team held a social evening for the tired workers.Grizedale Arts was awarded a grant from the Community Projects Fund of Shell Better Britain Campaign towards the cost of running the event.
