COMMUTERS who opposed unpopular plans to scrap long-stay parking spaces at a shopping centre car park have forced a U-turn.
South Lakeland district councillors yesterday (Thursday) looked set to abandon plans to remove 156 long-stay spaces from Kendal's Westmorland Shopping Centre car park.
As previously reported in the Gazette, the plans prompted an outcry from out-of-town workers who accused the council of putting the needs of occasional visitors before those of people who work and spend money daily in Kendal.
A report to be presented to SLDC's planning and transportation committee yesterday revealed that the plans attracted 28 letters of objection.
One letter was written by the manager of the nearby Benefits Agency, on behalf of 50 employees.
Councillors were yesterday recommended to withdraw the controversial plans "in light of the objections received" - and because of a survey which showed the long-stay spaces were well used.
