QUEEN Elizabeth School, Kirkby Lonsdale, is set to receive an additional £750,000 in grants for further building work.

New accommodation for technology suites with state-of-the-art computers and new rehearsal and performance space for the arts is on the 'shopping list' with building work planned over the next two financial years.

The money is from central government, channelled through Cumbria County Council.

Work will start immediately after Easter on a new block housing classrooms, offices and two information technology suites with state-of-the-art computers, attached to the new geography block currently being built.

Next year will see the extension of music and arts accommodation with new rehearsal and performance space allowing the expansion of creative work in music, drama and dance.

Money will also be spent on further landscaping around the cricket field where the new accommodation is concentrated.

Head teacher Chris Clarke said the school was delighted with the allocation, which means the school has been able to spend more than £3 million in building projects over the last six years.

"We are determined to create a stimulating school environment second to none, one which promotes our aspirations as a top performing school for all the children in our area," he said.

The school's aim was to develop confident, fully rounded young people with a broad range of skills and talents.
