A GREAT Dane from Grasmere called Garsak Sir Dodinell de Sauvage was the proud winner of a Kennel Club Association dog show held at the Coronation Hall, Ulverston.

Owner Richard Gifford, of Michaels Nook, gained best in show at the Barrow and District dog show out of 227 dogs from all over Britain.

Honorary secretary Sue Kennedy told the Gazette it was one of the best attended shows in the association's history.

"The turnout was amazing.

As well as all the owners, the event was well supported by the general public who stayed for the whole eight hours of showing," she said.

Mrs Kennedy also added that she had read the recent articles in the Westmorland Gazette about dog-dirt problems in South Lakeland and was very happy at the owners' responsible attitude to clearing up the show area during and after the event.

"I was also personally pleased that so many local owners managed to win first prizes," she said.

A Dachshund Junior called Switherland Cloe owned by Mrs M.

Newby, of Underbarrow, Kendal, won the best puppy in show class.

Meanwhile, the Labrador Retriever Post Graduate class was won by Mrs P.

Concannon, of Burneside, Kendal.

Fell from Mount Pleasant in Greenodd was overjoyed when he won the English Springer Spaniel Post Graduate Class.

Mrs L Crawley of Lightburn Road, Ulverston, took the honours in the Papillon Open, while Mrs R.

Archer of Grange-over-Sands won the Schipperke Post Graduate.

The Veteran 7-10 years Class was won by owner Mr T.

Graham from Askham-in-Furness, who also owned the Qualified for Crufts 2001 class winner.
