THE Art of Miles Davis is the latest exhibition at the Brewery's Warehouse Gallery.

The legendary American jazz trumpeter and band-leader was the pioneer of 'cool' jazz, but music was not his only means of expression for, in 1980, he began to experiment with visual art.

Self taught, he was inspired by Milan-based design movement Memphis, characterised by hot colours and clashing shapes.

His work then changed direction with swirling abstracts and African-inspired textures, and he filled his studio with tribal masks and African art.

His art was first exhibited in the United States in 1989, two years before his death.

His vibrant works have since been exhibited in Canada, California, Japan, New York, Switzerland, Florida and Michigan.

l The Art of Miles Davis runs at the Kendal arts centre until March 11, entry free.
