A MAN from Kendal is to live and work in one of the most remote and demanding areas of the world.

Tom Evans, Dalton Drive, Kendal has been selected to take part in a six week summer expedition to Ladakh in the Indian Himalayas.

The challenging expedition combines mountaineering and trekking in the remote and wild region with extensive fieldwork in life and earth sciences.

Mr Evans, 16, a student at Queen Katherine's School, Kendal, told the Gazette: "I know that I will have to be at my best to cope with the mental and physical challenges of such an adventure."

Expedition Development Officer Clare Kavanagh said: "Tom will have to be physically fit, enthusiastic and resourceful in order to cope with living under canvas for the duration of the expedition."

When they arrive in the Himalayas the group members will spend time at a base camp acclimatising.

They will then be split into smaller groups to undertake the geographical and scientific challenges set before them.

Each expedition includes a team of experienced leaders from the fields of education, industry, medicine and the services, to ensure safety and professional organisation.
