KENDAL teenagers James Proctor and Chris Elleray have proved a real hit on cult television series Robot Wars.

The pair were joined by James' dad Lucien for the battle against Sir Killalot and the other house robots on the BBC series hosted by Craig Charles.

Their robot, Out Of The Blue, nearly did not make the challenge as the team could not get the robot's shell bolted down as they were due to take centre stage.

But, armed with its compressed air flipper, the weighty robot scrapped and tussled with the house robots and lived to tell the tale.

The trio spent almost two years working on the finished machine, which James estimates to be worth around £800.

"It was a really good day and the robot did well.

We avoided the house robots and although we ran out of air for the flipper it did really well," said 16-year-old James, the captain of the team.

James, now a student at Kendal College, and Chris, also 16, a student at Lancaster and Morecambe College, had already had experience making robots for a Queen Katherine School project and thoroughly enjoyed their day at Robot Wars.

Their machine was one of just 64 robots new to the series, which joined 32 seeded competitors from previous wars.

They are not allowed to say how they got on but their efforts against the mighty machines can be seen tonight (Friday) on BBC2 at 6.45pm.
