THE Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment received the Freedom of Ulverston today.

Around 120 soldiers from the regiment’s 1st and 4th Battalions marched through the town, in the rain, today.

The troops were given a Freedom Scroll and they also attended a civic reception.

Major Michael Brandwood TD, county secretary for The Duke of Lancaster's Regiment, said: “We are honoured that Ulverston Town Council has bestowed the Freedom of the town on the regiment.

"It is a tremendous accolade and a great privilege to have.

"Such an occasion can only serve to strengthen the links that already exist between the Regiment and the town of Ulverston.”

At 11-30am the soldiers marched from Ford Park House to the grassed area at Ford Park.

Scores of proud residents turned out to steal a glimpse of the troops as they paraded around the park.

MP for Barrow and Furness John Woodcock, the Mayor of Ulverston Coun Phil Lister and Colonel of the regiment Brigadier Mike Griffiths, were just a few of the VIPS who attended the parade.

Rev Anthony Wells then led the Drumhead Service which began with the hymn ‘I vow to thee, my country'.

Alicen Cart, 45, of Ulverston, whose son is in the TA and will be going to Afghanistan next year, said: “I’m always proud of my son whatever he does but today is extra special."
