FOR its third year in a row Kirkbie Kendal School has seen a year on year rise with it's pupils A Level results.

As well as a very high percentage of the highest grades across all subjects every student achieved A level recognition. Plus, 40 per cent of all PE students achieved the highest level grades.

Kenneth Sandman, of Kendal, was beaming when he discovered he had achieved A* in Maths and 3As in Physics, Chemistry and Computing. The 17-year-old now plans to study Engineering at Durham University.

"I'm very happy," said Mr Sandman. "I decided to study engineering as I like physics and Maths so it seemed like the obvious choice."

Twin sisters Hope and Amy Dawson both achieved the same UCAS points despite studying different subjects.

Hope, who was awarded a Distinction in Health and Social Care and B in Media Studies, said she thought it was 'really weird' her and Amy, who got A in Media Studies and Bs in Drama, English Language and Literature, achieved the same points.

"It's really sad Amy is going to be moving to Leeds and I'm going to stay here to study a teaching course at Kendal College," said Ms Dawson.

Ski pro Ashley Hill, who won the English Championship slalom race in Bormio this year, also managed to find time to study, in between practicing on the slopes, to achieve AA in a sports diploma and C in Media Studies.

Although next year there is going to be a steep rise in fees, Mr Hill said he was determined to take a year off to enjoy a winter on the slopes during a ski season, ahead of going to university in 2012.

Head teacher Phil Hyman said: "We are pleased that the hard work of our students and staff has allowed our students to follow their chosen pathways.

"On behalf of the entire staff at KKS I wish all of the students continued success in their future studies and careers. Thank you to all parents/carers of the students and staff that have supported them throughout their time at Kirkbie Kendal School.

"Due to the changes in university fees we are seeing a lot fewer students take a gap year – just 3 students this year.

"Eighty percent of students will enter University this year and seventeen percent are going into employment with training, including prestigious apprenticeship with BAE."
