Rusland was bathed in glorious sunshine on Saturday as hundreds of visitors enjoyed the village's 129th horticulture and sports show.

There was plenty going on for families to enjoy with a whole range of exhibits as well as activities to try out and track races.

Children were especially captivated by a jester's workshop run by local juggler Andy Yates.

Alexander Knowles, 11, from Ambleside said he had a brilliant day at the show.

“I ran in the fell race and I didn’t come last,” he said. “But I did come second to last.

"I've been enjoying the circus skills. Andy came to our school to do a demonstration and it was really good.”

Caitlin Mason, nine, from Seatle was busy learning to use 'devil sticks' but admitted she wasn't quite ready to set the ends on fire as professionals do.

She said: “I have really enjoyed the show. My two chickens Dilly and Fefe also came joint first in the pet show.”

Show secretary Antony Meanwell said: “It was touch and go when we were here at 7am and it was raining pretty hard.

“But everybody has enjoyed themselves, it's been a sizzling success.

“The show is all about catering for families so we paid for the jesters to come and work with the kids for free. It's not about trying to sell things to people, but just to let everyone have a really good time.

“The organising committee is made of 51 local people, so we can make sure everyone is represented and get everyone involved.”

There will be a full report from Rusland in Thursday's Gazette.
