People living near the Drill Hall at Staveley were, on Friday morning, at a loss to account for the sudden crash coming from the direction of that place.
Later it was ascertained that part of the roof had fallen in and before noon the remaining portion had collapsed.
50 YEARS AGO - 1963
Richard, a 10-year-old budgerigar belonging to Miss Swinbank, of The Green, Clapham, made his tenth break for freedom this week.
Sometimes his escapades have lasted only a night but once last year he was away for a month during which time he travelled as far as Lowgill, seven miles from Clapham.
25 YEARS AGO - 1993
Kirkby Lonsdale’s longest serving part-time fireman Des Howarth has retired this week after more than 30 years service.
Mr Howarth, 55, who lives in the town, works as a maintenance officer at Casterton School.
