***All lanes are now open***

Three lanes of a motorway have been closed resulting in severe delays after a caravan overturned causing the carriageway to be blocked.

At around 3.30pm, it was reported that a van towing a caravan had overturned on the M6 northbound between junction 31 for Samlesbury and junction 31a for Preston/Longridge.

Emergency services are currently on scene and a man, believed to be the driver of the van, is being treated for suspected chest injuries.

A spokesperson for Highways England said: "The M6 northbound at junction 31a (Preston East/Longridge), three lanes have been closed due to a serious collision.

"Traffic officers, Lancashire road police, the fire service and North West ambulance are currently at the scene."

There are severe delays on both carriageways with traffic queueing for around four miles, and congestion as far back as junction 30 for the M61 interchange.

A spokesperson for the police said: "A van that's been towing a caravan has overturned.

"It looks like both of the vehicles have rolled over.

"It doesn't look like any other vehicles have been involved but because of the road conditions it seems the caravan has been swaying slightly.

"The driver is suffering with suspected chest injuries but they are not thought to be serious at this time.

"At about 4.45pm one lane was opened and vehicle recovery is underway.

"The driver is being treated at the roadside."
