Isolated in my coronavirus geriatric purdah my thoughts are with the thousands in a similar position but in homes and areas wrecked by recent storms and floods.

Those hit by 'Ciara' and 'Dennis' are sitting in damp and rotting homes with a killer respiratory virus stalking their every move.

But by the grace of a random kink in the atmospheric jetstream that could have been the thousands of families in the Kent catchment who are prone to flooding.

Yet what are we doing to lessen this threat to local lives, homes and businesses?

The Environment Agency Kent flood alleviation plan sits fully-funded at £75.6m and 'oven-ready' to go but still local pressure groups, on the basis of no facts whatsoever, seek to frustrate and overturn this democratically agreed, socially and economically responsible project.

It is ominous that the beautifully produced report 'Kendal Vision', in all of its expensive 150 pages, completely ignores the massive potential of the flood alleviation scheme other than to imply (page 29) that it is not yet approved.

It is, and at every level of democratic debate from Europe to town and parish councils.

Similarly, the latest South Lakeland News propaganda sheet of SLDC (issue 42, 24 pages long) makes no mention anywhere of this once-in-a-generation opportunity to better Kendal town and riverside villages, certainly the biggest improvement on the cards for SLDC's patch this century.

And soon to be amongst us is the 'Green Jury'. This 'jury' is a 'randomly-selected' group of 20 who will 'guide' our councillors.

No 'random' selection of 20 individuals can safely reflect the real worry and, yes, terror of the 1000-plus families living under the threat of flooding again.

Eco-niceties of flora and fauna, however important and fashionable, are surely secondary to the immediate safety and health of families? One thing I would bet my pension on; I will not be amongst the 20 'randomly' selected jurors!

When coronavirus goes away the UK economy will be left in totally uncharted territory. Let us press our politicians with a clear and united voice to honour this agreed spend on our safety and prosperity, safe from floods!
