I have visited Brantwood but only in summer, so I enjoyed reading Paul Williamson’s article about Bethan Pettit and the garden in spring.
Since the garden is now closed to the public I shall definitely go there next year at this time to see the woodland flowers at their best.
In particular I should love to see the Soldanella alpina or Alpine Snowbell.
I have seen this plant in the Alps where I shall probably never be able to go again, but I have never seen it in a British garden so it will be a particular delight.
Primula denticulata, or Drumhead Primula, is a more robust plant and one of the garden flowers most attractive to butterflies at this time of year.
I attach a photo of a Red Admiral which drank this flower’s nectar for a long while before having to sleep it off (early April 2017).
