A BLUSTERY wind upended a number of keen sailors during South Windermere Sailing Club’s first-ever Wintermere Open Regatta.
Nineteen boats with 25 adult and junior sailors entered the one-day, three-race regatta. Mike Deane from the host club won overall in his K1 despite sailing the wrong course in the first race.
Joe Quick, from Coniston Sailing Club, came second in his Solo. SWSC member Guy Wheeler, sailing a Streaker, came in third and Royal Windermere Yacht Club member Phil Snewin finished fourth, helming his Flying Fifteen.
In addition to support from the race stewards’ boat, the two safety boats were kept busy with a number of capsizes.
Winner Mike Deane said: “Races two and three found most competitors managing to follow the right course, and conditions seemed to favour the K1 which was planing, and Flying Fifteens were not.
"The blustery conditions also meant that the spinnaker runs didn't help them too much.”
