THERE was a host county winner when the Cumbria Crown Green Association staged the 2019 British Crown Green Bowling Association (BCGBA) Junior Individual Merit competition at Netherfield last week.

Each junior individual merit winner and runner up from the 15 member counties took part in what is generally known as the 'Junior All England.'

And Cumbrian champion Callum Sharples came out on top, beating Shropshire’s Ben Hinton 21-15 in the final.

The 17-year-old, who plays for several teams in the Furness area including Lindal, won three games to reach the semi-final where he saw off 12-year-old Alfie Knight from North Midlands.

He then took the trophy with a composed performance in the final before being presented with the trophy by Furness based BCGBA deputy president Ken Howarth.
