A RECORD that had not been broken for 10 years was smashed at the penultimate English championship fell race over the weekend.

More than 300 runners competed at the Derek Price Memorial Grisedale Horseshoe Fell Race on Saturday with the women setting off around 10 minutes before the men.

And Kelli Roberts of Helm Hill is on her way to officially securing a top spot in the English Championships after once again breaking Saturday’s race record by two minutes.

The British fell champion finished the 10-mile course in 2-01-23.

Ambleside runner Scout Adkin (02-07-39) crossed the finish line in second place with Helm Hill ‘s Sharon Taylor (2-09-57) close behind in third and first FV40.

For the men, it was a battle between Keswick team mates with Brennan Townshend claiming the win in 1-44-49 and Steven Hebblethwaite (01-44-58) in close second along with Mark Lamb (01-45-52) chasing behind in third place.

Helm Hill’s Rob Jebb (01-46-18) came in fourth place and was first MV40. Calder Valley’s Karl Gray (01-56-06) was the first MV45 and Kendal’s Mark Roberts (01-59-00), of Borrowdale Fell Runners, was the first MV55 while Helm’s Billy Procter was first MV60 in a creditable 80th place.

Ambleside’s Lou Osborn (2-14-04) was the first FV45 and fifth female while Dark Peak’s Judith Jepson (02-22-20) was the first FV50 and 10th female overall.
