A DROP-off in numbers in the Kendal's Women's Basketball Club organised at the Queen Katherine School in Kendal has prompted a renewed recruitment drive.

Women leaving the sport to go to university, have families or moving away mean that, more than ever, new faces are welcome to attend.

One of the organisers Louise Foster says: "Most girls do not get the opportunity to play basketball at school and so most women come along only having played netball before, and so gradually pick up basketball skills.

"We are open to all age from 16 and upwards and even have a couple of mothers and daughters who come along together and play.

"We focus on enjoyment rather than competitiveness, but we have had the odd friendly match against local university teams."

Throughout November the Kendal club is pushing for new people to give the sessions are try (with the first session free of usual £3 charge).

"Having just returned to playing basketball since having a baby, it's a great reminder that the sport is more fun than going to the gym as you are exercising without even knowing it,"says Louise.

Sessions are held on Thursdays in November (7.30-8.30pm) at Queen Katherine School sports hall. Contact for more details - Kendal 737664 or 824081.
