THE SOUTH Lakes Girls League is looking forward to making a return when the next season gets under way.

The 2019/20 season unfortunately came to a premature end due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Girls teams from across the county competed in the league which has five different age divisions from Under 15s to Under 7s.

The league had also started an Under 13s Cup competition which was just getting under way before the season was interrupted.

The Under 15s League only had five teams in the division. Kendal United were five points clear at the top in a relatively competitive league.

The most success was found to be in the Under 13s League where 11 teams competed in a very close and hard-fought campaign.

Ulverston Rangers were three points clear at the top, however up to four teams were in contention for the league title.

Dalton, Morecambe Girls, Wattsfield Youth and Barrow Celtic were all closing in on the leaders.

The competition from sixth was also very close with Kendal United, Lancaster Giants and Grange United all battling it out for a strong position in the league.

Each team put on impressive performances in another hard-fought competition.

The Under 11s League continued to prove to be fun and friendly football for young girls’ teams who also gained a lot of experience in playing.

Wattsfield and Dalton had two different teams in the division, with Crookland Casuals and Kendal United also taking part in what proved to be a short season due to the sudden arrival of the virus.

Further down the leagues both the Under 9s and Under 7s played non-competitive fixtures.

Meanwhile nine teams were also in the Under 9s division.

The Westmorland FA which runs the South Lakes Girls League was able to gain a new sponsor prior to the last season thanks to Express Plumbing Supplies.

Girls football continues to grow, especially in the junior age categories.

The Westmorland FA will be looking for more teams to enter the South Lakes Girls League for whenever the new season gets going after government restrictions are eased.
