ONE of the fastest growing sports in the region is back bigger and better than ever for another season in the south Lakes.

Surf the Turf has reopened for a spring and summer of hi-octane mountain boarding on the boomerang hill site next to the Lakeland Maize, Sedgwick.

The centre is the only place in the region to host the sport, which takes its lead from skateboarding and snowboarding, but is much easier to get the hang of.

Surf the Turf owner and seasoned boarder Markus Harvey is on hand to give novice riders all the help and advice they need to get going, while experienced riders will be looking forward to getting back on the course’s jumps, moguls and infamous ‘cliff drop’ descent.

This year a new path has been laid in the adjoining field to avoid what Mr Harvey described as ‘cake mix foot syndrome’ that resulted from the rains of 2008.

However, getting muddy is all part of the fun in this sport, with the added benefit that any ‘wipeouts’ will be provided a soft grass-cushioned landing – making it perfect for beginners.

Work is also under way on a new race track at the site, which should provide somewhere for Surf the Turf to hold race competitions.

It is also hoped that this new course will be suitable for mountain bikes and Mr Harvey is asking people to get in contact if they would be interested in taking part in a mountain bike specific night.

Equipment and safety gear hire is available from the centre, including the use of pads, helmets and the updated fleet of mountain boards.

Advance booking is required on 07740861019. Surf the Turf also takes group bookings.
