CARLISLE United fans travelling by train to watch their team play Southampton in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy Final are being advised to set off as early as the Friday - two days before the big match.

Virgin Trains says that route improvement work between Carlisle and Preston on the West Coast main line between 12 noon on Saturday March 27 and 3pm Sunday, March 28 means that fans are recommended to leave Carlisle on the Friday, or Saturday. None of the scheduled trains from Carlisle to London Euston on Sunday will be able to reach London in time for the kick-off, says Virgin.

The last through train on Saturday March 27 is the 11.49 from Carlisle, as later departures will involve either road coaches or a diverted train to Preston, joining normal trains there.

Because of the demand, the number of seat reservations, which are free of charge, remaining is limited and fans are advised to book as soon as possible.

The usual route is due to reopen on Sunday 28 March in time for returning fans, who should make reservations to be sure of getting on their chosen train.
