IRISH international mountain runner John Heneghan (Pudsey & Bramley) won the 15k Puma Hawkshead Trail Race as 1,200 competitors and their families brought a ten-fold increase to the resident population of the small Lakeland village on Saturday.

Salford’s John Brown was close behind Heneghan in 60.25, with Leeds City AC’s veteran Martin Roscoe making the podium with 61.56 in third.

First Cumbrian runner was Ambleside AC’s Stuart Shuttleworth, who finished ninth overall.

Running legend 71-year-old Ron Hill MBE made his debut in the race and has now run every day since December 20 1964 – over 15,500 consecutive days, totting up than 150, 000 miles.

GB International mountain runner Candice Taylor (Clayton-le-Moors Harriers) was the first woman in 71-17 and proved stronger on the tricky ascents and descents than Commonwealth Games Marathon tenth-place finisher, Scotland’s Susan Partridge, City of Glasgow AC, who finished runner up in 72-11.

International junior triathlete Vicky Graves(City of York) was third in 73-22, with Ulverston’s Helen Woodley the first Cumbrian in sixth overall.

More than 100 children under the age of eight took part in the accompanying fun trails, with all of them winning a medal. Samba drumming band Boom Dang played again at the openign and closing ceremonies. Prizes were presented by Richard Leafe, Chief Executive of the LDNPA, who also competed in the trail race.
