Hello and welcome to my new Grass Roots football blog. I felt it was about time The Grass Roots football in Cumbria got some attention. The Gazette does a great job of covering it but I felt I could enhance the coverage by doing this blog. I called my blog The Grass Roots as this is where a lot of footballers start.

So for those that don’t know much about this type of football in Cumbria I thought I would start off by giving an overview of what it’s all about:

Most Grass Roots teams in Cumbria take part in The Talbot Insurance Westmorland League. It’s a league which consists of 4 divisions from division 1 to division 4. There are 13 teams in division 1 and 4 , 12 teams in division 2 and 11 in Division 3.

All matches usually take place on Saturdays with a 2pm kick off time, cup matches take place at 1pm/1.30pm.

So Far This Season:

I thought I would get you all up to speed with how each division is shaping up:

Division 1:

Kendal County are the defending champions of this division, they currently lie in third place having lost 2 games, but have games in hand and are only 3 points behind the current leaders Appleby. The teams in that division who have impressed me the most have been Kendal County and Wetheriggs United.

At the bottom end Sedbergh prop up the rest with Ibis just above them still looking for their 1st win of the season.

Division 2:

Kirkoswald lead this division by 6 points, having a good season having only lost 1 match so far. This league Is Kirkoswald’s to lose at the moment, and they seem to be a tough team to stop at present.

At the bottom Sedbergh’s reserve side prop up the rest with 3 other teams.

Division 3:

This league is all about Ambleside United’s reserve team, they are cruising having an 8 point gap over Kendal United. However Kendal do have games in hand and winning those matches may close the gap on Ambleside. Kendal United are sponsored by Kendal College and play an exciting brand of football which is good on the eye and seem to be Ambleside’s most likely challengers.

Lunesdale, Penrith and Burneside’s reserve teams are at the bottom end with Lunesdale propping up the rest.

Division 4:

This division is very tight anyone of 5 or 6 teams can still win this league. There’s only a point separating 5 of the teams in the division. The current leaders are Kirkby Thore having played a game less than Endmoor in 2nd, but overall this league is very much up for grabs at the moment.

At the bottom Windermere S.C,Coniston and Dent are fighting it out, with Windermere S.C at the bottom.

So that’s a look at what’s going on in each division, there’s a lot of exciting stuff going on at the moment all of which makes each league an interesting one to be a part of.

Anyhow, before I go here is what matches are on at the weekend (weather permitting)
