Kendal Men opened their Kukri North West League programme with a home 5-5 draw against newly-promoted Preston.
Ewan Galloway struck an early brace before the visitors pulled one back just before half time.
Kendal restored their two goal advantage with the impressive Smith setting up Galloway for his third.
However the visitors continued to plug away and got another goal as Kendal failed to clear their D. With the score at 3-2 the match was still in the balance. When Galloway added a fourth goal to his tally the Greens might justifiably have thought they had done enough.
But Kendal gifted two goals and set up a end to end finish. Ollie Thorman handed Kendal the lead one last time only for Preston to level the scores once more and split the points.
