STAFF at a Kendal care home are celebrating after it was rated 'Good' by inspectors.

Heron Hill Care Home is a purpose-built care home with the capacity to look after 86 older people, including residents with dementia.

The previous inspection by the Care Quality Commission in 2019 had identified areas in which the service required improvement but the report confirms that these have now been addressed - and all areas of the care home are now rated 'Good'.

Manager Nicola Spedding said: "I'm really proud of the team. This is a great and well-deserved accolade for them after all their hard work over the last few years.

"I'd like to thank them and our residents and their families for all their support."

Inspectors found staff cared for residents with dignity and respect and that residents and their families found the management approachable.

The report said: "The provider employed two activities coordinators who led the staff team in providing activities for people.

"People enjoyed a range of group activities such as crafts, an audio book club, exercises and visiting entertainers."

Feedback from residents included: "I go to quizzes and keep fit, there is lots to do it you want."

Relatives had told the inspector that 'I would definitely recommend the home, we are really happy', and another said the home was 'fantastic'.

As well as assessing how the care home is being run, inspectors also spoke to staff, residents, relatives as well as getting feedback from the Local Authority and professionals who work with the service.

The report said that those working at the home knew how to deliver appropriate care, could manage medicines safely and recognised signs of poor care and harm.

They were also fully aware of the procedures in place if an accident or incident occurred.

The inspectors drew particular attention to the strong team in place, noting:

"The registered manager was creative in promoting working in the home as a career, to attract and retain staff.

"They highlighted how the home could offer opportunities for people to gain further qualifications which could lead to promotion and a long-term career path."

The home is operated by Abbey Healthcare, who also run Kendal Care home which is also rated 'Good'.
